AutoLog® Wireless ground- and surface water monitoring system(s).

AutoLog wireless ground- and surface water monitoring system is complete solution for remote monitoring and controlling different kinds of ground- and surface water applications like in refuse dump- and other environmentally critical area and river flood detection systems. Similar architecture can be used to collect level or other data from e.g. tank farms.

Case reference study: Wireless dump area's groundwater monitoring system

Problem

Refuse dumps can have many harmful contaminant effects to nearby nature. To minimize the effects, many regulations have been made. One of these handles the constant monitoring and reporting of the groundwater level.

Solution

By using battery operating AutoLog wireless sensors, measurements can be easily collected from nearby points. Measurements are send wirelessly to the master unit, which is connected to AutoLog GSM-RTU, which then forwards the measurements to the AutoLog ControlMan server via the GSM/GPRS network. From the ControlMan, users can easily monitor measurements and print needed reports.

Benefits

  • Minimizing contaminant effects to nearby nature
  • Fulfils environmental regulations
  • Easy installation – no cables
  • Uses EU-free 868MHz frequency
  • No need for own server PC or maintenance staff
  • Web based, multi featured interface
  • Operates through normal web browser without any client software installations
  • Allows many (tens of) simultaneous users to monitor the application from anywhere and any time
  • Low cost, long life span and highly scalable solution
  • Based on well proven AutoLog RTU technology. (Used by e.g. by world's biggest oil producer company Saudi Aramco in it's nation wide CP system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia).
  • Reliable GSM/GPRS and SMS as a backup communication. Advanced GSM communication functions.
  • Complete solution directly from Finnish hardware manufacturer and software project designer.
  • Wide operating range -30°...+70°C.
  • IP65 / NEMA-4X protection class, Ex class 1 zone 2 enclosures or as specified.
  • Centralized and shared information. Map locations, statuses, alarms, historical measurement trends and -reports, Alarms forwarding to GSM and e-mail, system diagnostics, etc.

AutoLog Technology

The Wireless Dump Area Groundwater Monitoring System is based on well-proven AutoLog technology. AutoLog Control Units has been designed and manufactured in Finland by FF-Automation since 1976. Almost 40 years AutoLog control units and complete remote monitoring and controlling solutions has been used all over the world. e.g. by world's biggest oil producer company Saudi Aramco uses AutoLog CP RTUs and SCADA system in it's nation wide CP system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. FF-Automation has long term knowledge and capability to make reliable, flexible and long life span solutions, with complete support and training for local installation-, operation- and maintenance teams. The investment costs and payback time can be estimated beforehand.

wireless I/O

System Description

AutoLog GSM-RTU and Wireless I/O Master Station:

The AutoLog GSM-RTU master station is installed inside the outdoor cabinet. It connects with the Wireless Sensor master module via the serial port 1 using the standard Modbus RTU communication protocol. The master module is installed on top of the antenna pole. Through the master module, GSM-RTU receives measurements from the nearby battery powered wireless groundwater sensor modules.

Through the serial port 2, the GSM-RTU communicates with the internal GSM modem, by sending the measurements to the AutoLog ControlMan server and by receiving special commands, parameters, program change requests etc. from a maintenance user.

The GSM-RTU also reads the groundwater level and other quality measurements locally from wired sensors connected with its analog inputs. The GSM-RTU also controls a pump according to water level. Water is pumped to a water treatment plant.

AutoLog Wireless I/O with (groundwater) level sensors:

The wireless I/O module wakes up according to a defined interval (e.g. once per hour) and measures the surface level using a pressure difference sensor. After that it goes back to a low power sleep mode.

The wireless I/O module is battery operating so it doesn’t need any wirings. Because of its intelligent power saving modes, it can operate years without any maintenance. Wireless I/O module can also handle the low power supplying to sensor intelligently so that sensor can be powered only while measurement is taken. The powering of the sensor is not needed for all types of sensors.

The wireless sensor needs to be installed so that it has direct line of sight with the master module. Maximum distance between the master and the sensor module is about 200 meters. The master module has an onmi-directional antenna so the sensor can be located anywhere in the range of 200 meters coverage area. The coverage area can be increased using router modules.

The GSM-RTU also monitors the signal strengths and the battery voltages of the wireless sensors and sends an alarm message to the ControlMan if needed.

IoT SCADA

AutoLog IoT SCADA:

The AutoLog GSM-RTUs communicate wirelessly and bidirectionally with ControlMan Cloud SCADA System servers through GSM / GPRS / Internet networks. Default GPRS communication can be optionally replaced with SMS as backup communication method. Servers and CP GSM-RTUs can be maintained remotely via GSM and Internet networks.

The ControlMan servers are hosted by well proven Internet hosting companies with 24/7/365 maintenance and data backup plan. ControlMan application is always running on the latest server technology and software platform. Customer doesn't need own server or maintenance teams for the server. Servers receive, store and share the information to authorized users through secure https:// connection. The ControlMan's user interface can be opened anywhere without any client software installations using normal web browser. The ControlMan is very long term, reliable and high techology solution.

The ControlMan system is easily expanded and maintained. New configurations can be made remotely. System allows easy creation of several user groups with different user levels. System can be expanded unlimitedly by adding new control units and servers.

Optionally if customer wants to have own server PC, the ControlMan Cloud SCADA system can be installed on the local server or replaced with Indusoft Web Studio HMI/SCADA software. FF-Automation has distributed, educated and made several projects with this award winning software since 2003. We have also designed drivers (GPRS & SMS) for communication between Indusoft and AutoLog GSM-RTUs.

Maintenance, training and support

FF-Automation can give comprehensive and long term support and training for the local installation, operation and maintenance teams. ControlMan servers and Web application can be maintained remotely by FF-Automation engineers. ControlMan system reports automatically if something abnormal happens in the system so local maintenance team and FF-Automation engineers can solve the problems immediately.
